Dimethylamine Aqueous Solution
Detail
1. Properties of Dimethylamine Aqueous Solution:
Chemical Formula: (CH₃)₂NH (as solute)
Physical State: A clear, colorless to pale yellow liquid with a strong ammonia-like odor.
Concentration: Commonly available in 40% to 60% by weight of DMA in water.
pH: Strongly basic due to the amine group.
Boiling Point: Depends on the concentration; typically higher than pure dimethylamine.
Density: Approximately 0.9–1.1 g/cm³ based on concentration.
Solubility: Fully miscible with water.

2. Reactivity and Chemical Behavior:
Basicity: Highly basic, forming dimethylammonium ions ([(CH₃)₂NH₂]+) in solution.
Reactivity:
Reacts with acids to form dimethylammonium salts.
Can undergo alkylation, acylation, and other reactions typical of amines.
Combustion generates carbon dioxide, water, and nitrogen oxides.

3. Applications of Dimethylamine Aqueous Solution:
Chemical Synthesis:
Used as a precursor for the production of solvents, surfactants, and rubber chemicals.
Essential in manufacturing herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides.
Pharmaceutical Industry:
Used in the synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).
Water Treatment:
Plays a role in producing chemicals for water purification.
Resins and Adhesives:
Used as a component in the production of resins, adhesives, and curing agents.

4. Safety and Handling:
Toxicity: Can irritate the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract.
Flammability: Flammable under certain conditions.
Corrosive Nature: Can corrode some metals and materials.
Protective Measures: Use in a well-ventilated area or fume hood. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, goggles, and protective clothing.

5. Storage: Store in tightly sealed containers away from heat, flames, and incompatible materials. Keep in a cool, dry, and ventilated environment.
